Fast clear-sky solar irradiation computation for very large digital elevation models
نویسندگان
چکیده
This paper presents a fast algorithm to compute the global clear-sky irradiation, appropriate for extended high-resolution Digital Elevation Models (DEMs). The latest equations published in the European Solar Radiation Atlas (ESRA) have been used as a starting point for the proposed model and solved using a numerical method. A new calculation reordering has been performed to (1) substantially diminish the computational requirements, and (2) to reduce dependence on both, the DEM size and the simulated period, i.e., the period during which the irradiation is calculated. All relevant parameters related to shadowing, atmospheric, and climatological factors have been considered. The computational results demonstrate that the obtained implementation is faster by many orders of magnitude than all existing advanced irradiation models while maintaining accuracy. Although this paper focuses on the clear-sky irradiation, the developed software also computes the global irradiation applying a filter that considers the clear-sky index. © 2008 Elsevier B.V. Downscaling of global solar irradiation in complex areas in R
A methodology for downscaling solar irradiation from satellite-derived databases is described using R software. Different packages such as raster, parallel, solaR, gstat, sp and rasterVis are considered in this study for improving solar resource estimation in areas with complex topography, in which downscaling is a very useful tool for reducing inherent deviations in satellite-derived irradiati...

متن کاملEfficient assessment of topographic solar radiation to improve plant distribution models
Plant ecologists have recognized the importance of solar radiation for decades but have difficulty measuring it on plots. Proxies recorded on the ground or geographical information system (GIS) indices processed with a digital elevation model (DEM) have generally been used. Here we compare the efficiency of different methods of estimating spatially distributed topographic solar radiation, from ...
متن کاملHorizon brightness revisited: measurements and a model of clear-sky radiances.
Clear daytime skies persistently display a subtle local maximum of radiance near the astronomical horizon. Spectroradiometry and digital image analysis confirm this maximum's reality, and they show that its angular width and elevation vary with solar elevation, azimuth relative to the Sun, and aerosol optical depth. Many existing models of atmospheric scattering do not generate this near-horizo...
متن کاملModelling Topographic Variation in Solar Radiation in a GIS Environment
Clear sky shortwave solar radiation varies in response to altitude and elevation, surface gradient (slope) and orientation (aspect) , as well as position relative to neighbouring surfaces. While the measurement of radiation ̄ ux on a relatively ̄ at surface is straightforward, it requires a dense network of stations for mountainous terrain. The model presented here uses a digital elevation mode...
